Rokuro Harima, an employee at Otsuka Pharmaceutical, developed Pocari Sweat based on an experience he had while taking a business trip to Mexico in 1980 and being treated for a case of diarrhea. While at the hospital being treated, he watched a doctor hydrate with an intravenous solution, which inspired him to try to create a drink that could provide hydration as well as nutrients similar to those delivered via IV fluid. Harima then designed and manufactured Pocari Sweat to help others replenish fluid and regain their health after dehydration.
